Zachary Vanier

Director, Commercial Financing

Where I started:

I began working at First National in 2016 as a Residential Funder. I transitioned to Fulfillment Specialist before making the move to commercial, taking on the role of an Analyst on Team Syme-Steckler. Then a dual role, adding the responsibilities of business development. As a Director, I network and attend events to establish relationships with prospective clients.

How I grew:

Throughout my time at First National, I have always been eager to learn new roles and take on more responsibility. For me, it was important to continuously gain competence and proficiency, so when an opportunity arose, I was ready and could jump in with minimal training. I also took advantage of the courses available on the Learning Network and found it incredibly valuable to collaborate with co-workers to tap their expertise and gain hands-on skills.

The support I received:

During every review, I had the opportunity to share my career vision with my managers. I was open about where I wanted to go and what I wanted to achieve. They were always receptive and helpful in setting up learning, training or time with co-workers already in the prospective role, so I could immerse myself and really understand the responsibilities.

The First National difference:

First National is a great place to start and grow your career. I’ve had the opportunity to advance (four roles in three years) and gain a lot of new skills. That experience and proficiency is allowing me to succeed in my business development role, and will no doubt provide a strong foundation as I evolve in my career at First National. There is a friendly culture here with hardworking people who like to get the job done, but also like to have fun doing it. I’m learning every day and I find the work incredibly rewarding.

My advice and perspective:

Stay curious about all of the opportunities available at First National and be open to what is out there. You never know where your interests will take you. I honestly never thought that I would move into commercial or business development, but here I am and I’m really enjoying the challenge and opportunity. Take every chance to learn from your peers in other roles and understand their responsibilities and priorities. That knowledge contributes to productive collaboration. And put in the work because it definitely gets noticed and will help you achieve your goals.
