Jeanne Tan: A career full of learning and teaching others

First National Financial LP Sep 29, 2026   mins

Jeanne Tan has constantly pursued learning through new challenges and helps new employees develop their knowledge and their own passion to keep growing.

What has kept you at First National this long?

JT: I have been able to keep growing and learning new things. Initially, I was working in the Residential tax department. I then moved over to commercial taxes and then to commercial renewals. Early in my career, I was focusing on one specific area, and now I am immersed in the entire commercial process.

Which growth opportunities have you taken advantage of?

JT: At the start of my career, I spent two years at the start in Residential taxes. But I wanted to transition to commercial mortgages. I saw it as an opportunity to take on new challenges and learn more. In Residential, you’re dealing with individuals and fairly basic documentation. In Commercial, you’re dealing with bigger corporate clientele and more complex financial statements. Working in Commercial, I’ve gained knowledge in CMHC procedures and processing, renewals, extensions and assumptions.

What are you most proud to have helped build or shape, and why was it meaningful?

JT: In both Residential and now in Commercial, I train new employees. My managers trust me, recognize that I know the job well and are confident I will teach the concepts, policies and procedures properly. That part of my job is incredibly meaningful. I see the trainees applying the technical knowledge and relational skills I’ve taught them to help them succeed in their jobs. I’ve also been able to watch many people I’ve trained grow in the company, either in other departments or positions.

When did you know you found your place at First National?

JT: Being recognized and appreciated for what I do has a big impact on me. I’ve been recognized many times through our Employee Recognition Program. But the simple thank yous mean just as much. Feeling seen and appreciated for what you do makes you want to keep raising the bar on your contributions. In commercial renewals, we often deal with a lot of urgent requests that require immediate response. There have been times where we’ve had to close an assumption in a day, which requires a lot of documentation and coordination with different teams. Even with the pressure, I’m happy to dig in and contribute to deliver on time.

Knowing what you know now, what advice would you have given yourself on your first day?
JT: Stay passionate about your work and keeping learning. When you have that passion and are constantly growing your skills and knowledge, you can be more effective. When you are more effective, you have a great impact on people.
