What has kept you at First National this long?
RR: The culture at First National makes you feel like you are part of a family. From day one, everyone welcomed me, and everyone’s door was open. You can literally go to anyone, ask questions and not be judged. In our industry, there is an aura about First National. For six years prior to joining First National, I worked for two other lenders. When I went back to the same brokers under the badge of First National, I experienced a different level of trust and respect.
Which growth opportunities have you taken advantage of?
RR: I’ve been an Account Manager for 15 years. For me, growth isn’t about a position. It’s about the knowledge I absorb from my peers. I have grown and matured as a person because of the people around me. When I first joined, I was so focused on moving up the ladder. But my colleagues have always been extremely well rounded. They care about work obviously, but they also have families and other priorities. I’ve always seen what contentment really means and what it’s like to have a balance outside of work. Those people inspired me to expand beyond what I thought was possible for myself, both in my career and as a person. I really like who I am today and feel proud of the person I’ve become.
What are you most proud to have helped build or shape, and why was it meaningful?
RR: Workwise, I’m proud of the relationships I have with brokers. I’ve developed friendships with many of them outside of work. It is also rewarding to watch brokers grow their businesses and know that I’m playing a small part in that success. Personally, I’m proud of the family I’ve created and the life I’ve built for myself. By their example, my colleagues have taught me the importance of prioritizing family and relationships. We are constantly catching up and sharing about our kids, families and parents. When we talk, we rarely talk shop.
When did you know you found your place at First National?
RR: Within the first three months, I realized how much autonomy and freedom I had to do my job my way. There is no micromanagement. I’m treated as if I run my own business. I have full reign to figure out the best ways to hit my numbers and I don’t need to explain it. Having that autonomy allows me to be innovative with strategies and engagement approaches. I know my brokers and can tailor how I engage based on that knowledge. There are no templates at First National, which has always been refreshing for me.
Knowing what you know now, what advice would you have given yourself on your first day?
RR: Before I joined, I asked a lot of my existing brokers if they thought it was a good decision for me. Each one said yes. And they were right. The biggest lesson I’ve learned is the importance of balance. Happiness is broader than your role, your title and moving up the ladder.
