What does it mean to be a Woman of Inspiration? Every year, in celebration of Women’s History Month and International Women’s Day, we ask our team members to answer that question based on the impact their female peers have on them. This year, our team members recognized four women for how they lead, listen, encourage and celebrate others.
You have been recognized by your colleagues as a Woman of Inspiration. Why is that such an important milestone in your career journey so far?
“I have a strong work ethic and I try to share that value with my team members. In conversations with my team, specifically women on my team, many have told me that I am a role model for them. Watching my team members grow and gain confidence is one of my greatest joys. This recognition reflects my commitment to their development, growth and success.”
Nicole White, Senior Manager, Team Lead, Calgary Office
As a woman, what is it like to work at First National and what or who inspires you?
“Working as a woman at First National is a very positive and empowering experience. We have such a supportive environment that encourages collaboration, respect and growth. My leadership team (Amy Punzo and Wendy Burkin) has played a key role in my growth. Both women have helped me grow as an individual and as a leader, and they always inspire me to reach as high as possible. Most importantly, they’ve taught me to never lose sight of who I am. Through their example, I have learned how important it is to commit to excellence and be willing to uplift others. I am as motivated as ever to continue growing within my role and supporting the people around me to grow as well.”
Anna Raposo, Manager, Office Services, Team Lead, Toronto Office
How do you hope to inspire others both at work and in your life?
“I give 100%. I take what I know and try to do better. In our business, there is a lot of change. Guidelines and rules constantly evolve. We don’t always know the answers. It’s so important to stay curious. Curiosity is how you stretch yourself and build knowledge. I constantly encourage my team to be brave, ask questions, keep rising and reach for what they want.”
Mariana Bakalar, Senior Manager, Team Lead, Vancouver Office
This year’s theme for International Women’s Day is Give to Gain. When you think about that theme, what have you given in your career that ultimately shaped what you gained?
“I’ve given my experiences, knowledge, advice and friendship. I feel like I succeed if I help someone overcome an obstacle to grow, reach a goal they’ve been trying to achieve or go to the next level. I always aim to see and celebrate the potential in other people – just like people saw it in me. By giving this way, I’ve gained purpose. There is real value in seeing people, helping them and supporting their goals and dreams.”
Adriana Ketchian, Senior Manager, Team Lead, Montreal Office
If you could encourage women early in their careers to give one thing generously, what would it be and why?
“I would encourage them to give themselves the gift of confidence. I lacked that in the beginning of my career. Believe in your abilities. Share your ideas, regardless of how much experience you think you have. Take on challenges. Make mistakes. Support others. Everything changed for me when I developed confidence and understood the power of supporting others. I built a stronger team and more supportive relationships with executives.”
Anna Raposo, Manager, Office Services, Team Lead, Toronto Office
